Artist Statement:

Sean’s collage is intended to demonstrate what men are expected to be: strong, macho, with stamina. The images reflect this-they show the typical things men do. But strength and stamina can be a dangerous combination. Some men are violent towards others, including women. And doing things like going to war means men can get hurt and need help. All men need help. The map was added to show that men need to find their way home, to get help, to connect with others and to be heard. Men with disabilities don’t have the same opportunities as men who don’t have disabilities. And people sometimes think they are dangerous. People sometimes think he is dangerous. But people don’t know enough about disability-more education is needed. Sean wants understanding and compassion. He wants to connect with other men with disabilities so they can support each other. He wants people to know he is not aggressive, he is not dangerous.
