Hello and welcome to the Negotiating MASCULINITIES project led by Rob Wilton and Ann Fudge Schormans from McMaster University. In this visual arts-based project we look at how cultural norms of masculinity shape people’s experiences of disability and chronic illness, and the strategies they use to hold onto, change or reimagine masculinity in pursuit of a valued sense of self.
As part of the project, participants created visual artworks to show the links between experiences of chronic physical illness, mental ill health and intellectual disability, their sense of identity and what it means or doesn’t mean to be masculine. Many of these artworks are displayed here as part of the Negotiating MASCULINITIES exhibit.
