A collage of cut paper, ink, oil pastels and acrylic paint with the word “un-success” painted first in blue and then painted over in orange at its centre. There are three images that contain male police officers responding to a protest, a male golfer yelling and pumping his fist, and a male figure wearing climbing gear. There is also a silhouette of a human head with the word lonely printed over top, as well as the outline of a building with the words psychiatric hospital printed below it. At the top of the image, the words “this generation has mixed versions of masculinity” has been written in black ink. The words tough, struggle, sadness and madness have been written in black ink in different parts of the image. The background of the image is shaded in varying tones of black and grey.

Artist’s Statement:

It’s a mess. It’s like everything all in one little picture. This generation has mixed versions of masculinity. This is going on right now, with like the police are really tough. And then there’s mental illness, where there’s sadness, confusion, stress. And masculinity has something to do with bears, gorillas, and to be successful, you’ve got to be like athletes, being physical, traveling, you know, successful. But masculinity has changed. With mental illness, it can be un-success.
